Schedules & break times

Which classes students attend and when they attend them needs to be driven by

  • optimal learning opportunity

  • minimal transition times between classes

  • appropriate time allocations to subject areas

  • sufficient uninterrupted learning sessions

  • adequate activity breaks

The following links lead to examples of an elementary schedule and suggested time allocations to each subject area.

Optimal learning opportunity refers to the prime time each morning when students can best concentrate. Literacy and numeracy classes should be scheduled at this time.

At least 90 minutes of uninterrupted time is recommended each morning for literacy in the language of instruction and 60 minutes to numeracy. However, flexibility is the key to uninterrupted learning and the only 'locked-in' time is that allocated to subject specialists, such as sport and instrumental music.
